Finally Learning Spanish
I’m super excited today because I’m actually, finally, going to start studying Spanish!
I know, I know. You’re probably thinking – didn’t you already start learning Spanish?
Yes. Yes I did.
Previous Spanish Sessions
So if you’ve been following along at all, you know I’ve posted several of my Spanish study sessions from when I started about a year or so ago … and then I stopped because I was spending more time editing the videos I was making for the study sessions, rather than actually learning Spanish.
So I had to take a step back and re-work the plan of how this blog is going to flow. The first thing I wanted to do was to create some sort of start-up guide for complete beginners who are just starting a new language.
I wanted to give them a clear, simple direction to get started so they are not blindly wandering into language learning, just guessing at what to do or what to learn.
So I decided to do 2 things.
Free Video Course
First, I created a FREE video course called The Foreign Language Smart Start, which helps you get started on the right foot learning your first words and phrases in a foreign language.
It is completely free, no opt-in required. You can watch the whole thing by going to languagefromnothing.com/flss.
And if you want, you have the choice to opt-in with your email address and download a FREE guidebook to go along with the video course.
The guidebook goes step-by-step with the videos and also includes printable sheets of flashcards and a table you can use to keep track of your first phrases.
28 Day Challenge
The second thing I wanted to do was to put this start-up guide into practice by actually using it myself to learn Spanish.
That’s what brought me to create this 28 DAY CHALLENGE. Yay!
I will be using the video course and guidebook to start learning my first phrases in Spanish, one phrase a day for 28 days. And you can follow right along with me!
Here’s how the challenge will work.
The 28 days will be broken down into week days and week ends. During the week, Monday to Friday, I will use the Habitat Language method to learn one phrase each day. This is a specific method I talk about in the video course for building vocabulary using your own surroundings.
Then Saturday will be all about recall and experimentation. I won’t be learning anything new on this day. Rather, this is when I first see how many phrases I can recall from memory, along with revisiting any of them I might have forgotten.
I’ll also be experimenting with the phrases on Saturday, seeing if there are any patterns I can mix and match together, playing with them like legos. It will be a time to have fun and be a little creative.
Then Sunday will be the rest day. I will be taking a total rest from the language, not learning, studying, recalling, mixing, or matching at all on this day. It is meant to give your brain a day to not have to think about the new language, which it will probably need.
That is what the entire week looks like. Then the same thing starts over again on Monday. I will do this weekly pattern 4 times, creating 5 new phrases each week for a total of 20 new phrases, 4 days of recall & experimentation on Saturdays, and 4 days of complete rest on Sundays.
I have no idea how this challenge will pan out, but I’m excited to get it started and I’m excited for you to follow along with me if you’d like!
You don’t even have to be learning Spanish to follow along. Using The Foreign Language Smart Start, you can do the 28 Day Challenge with any language you prefer.
